To date, HEP has supported 146 Early Career Research Awards since the inauguration of the Office of Science program in April 2010: 86 to University Academics and 60 to Lab Scientists. In order to increase the coordination and impact of this unique group of HEP leaders we are in the process of standing up an HEP Early Career Award Network (ECAN) to bring the community together to make a broader impact to HEP Science and Outreach.
As part of this we are hosting an ECAN workshop to be held June 8-9th, 2023 at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. This is anticipated to be a hybrid in-person/virtual event. An ongoing poll among the past ECA winners has shown strong interest, with an expected audience (in-person and virtual) of more than 50.
The ECAN will provide a formal structure and create a resource to connect and engage awardees with mentors, collaborators, and opportunities to engage with community planning, related partners (office of Science, NSF) and international stakeholders. This workshop will focus on establishing the initial setup of working groups for the three major topics (Networking and Career Development, Mentoring, and DEI / Community Outreach) and help define initial timelines and milestones for the ECAN. The workshop also offers several keynote speakers on selected topics and a variety of networking opportunities for ECAN members to get to know each other. The expected results of the workshop will be essential for defining the structure of the Early Career Awards Network by focusing both the needs of the new ECA members and the experiences of the alumni.
