Workshop Overview

This workshop is the third in the series titled New Physics Opportunities at Neutrino Facilities (NPN). This year’s installment will focus on neutrinos from core-collapse supernovae. Neutrino signal from the next Galactic supernova will help us unravel the explosion mechanism, probe the properties of the nascent neutron star, study neutrino oscillations that occur at extreme conditions that cannot be reproduced in the laboratory, understand the origin of many heavy elements, and look for signs of physics beyond the Standard Model. Because of this remarkable physics potential, detection of supernova neutrinos is one of the core physics goals of the next-generation neutrino experiments, including DUNE, Super/Hyper-Kamiokande, and IceCube/DeepCore/PINGU. Our workshop will bring together theorists and experimentalists to explore the wealth of relevant physics. The meeting agenda will include models of the supernova explosion mechanisms, neutrino oscillation dynamics, well-motivated physics topics, possible detector improvements, supporting tools and measurements, necessary background studies, analysis strategies, and complementarity with multiple experiments. Atmospheric neutrinos and other astrophysical neutrinos will also be discussed.
