The decay width of the Higgs boson with ATLAS – Samyukta Krishnamurthy (University of Arizona)

Description

Since the discovery of the Higgs boson, precision measurement of its properties has been of utmost importance. In the Standard Model, the Higgs boson has a narrow width, a direct measurement of which is not possible due to experimental resolution. An indirect technique that compares on-shell and off-shell Higgs boson production can be used to study the width, under certain assumptions about the Higgs boson couplings. This seminar presents the measurement of the Higgs boson width performed by the ATLAS collaboration using the full Run II dataset collected at 13 TeV. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with an observed (expected) significance of 3.2 (2.4) 𝜎, marking the experimental evidence for off-shell Higgs production.
