From 1946 to 1958, the United States tested nuclear weapons, most notably numerous hydrogen bombs in the Marshall Islands, a collection of coral atolls in the midst of the Pacific Ocean. From 2014 to 2019, we traveled to the Marshall Islands nearly a dozen times, including three trips to the northern Marshall Islands, where the bomb tests were conducted. We made measurements to determine external gamma radiation levels and collected food, soil, and sediment samples from across the affected atolls. The environmental radiological picture that emerges from our work is complex. Unlike suggested by reports in numerous media outlets, the Marshall Islands are not more radioactive than Chernobyl.
