Description

The so-called “Physics Beyond Colliders” study group at CERN was launched in 2016, and MATHUSLA is one of several new detectors proposed for the LHC. It is a large-area surface detector envisaged to run during the HL-LHC era to search for neutral long-lived particles with sensitivity up to three orders of magnitude beyond that of the main LHC detectors. We will discuss the physics potential of MATHUSLA, the conceptual detector design, design optimizations, siting choices and status and plans. We will also briefly discuss other new detectors proposed for the LHC.
